14 Questions to ... Reino Suonsilta

Wednesday, 07 December 2016 22:42

Reino Suonsilta, Snipe sailor from Helsinki and member of the Promotion Committee

- 1) Your first time on a sailing boat?

I rented a 20 ft daysailer with my girlfriend (later my wife) after reading tons of sailing books. We barely managed to get back in one piece, with only one lost jib bag.

- 2) Your first time on a Snipe?

In 1979 we bought our first Snipe, a Persson copy built by Svante Lindholm in 1974. We sailed that for 2 years, went away from sailing for 20 years and then started again in 2004.

- 3) The most bizarre thing that happened in a regatta?

I was sailing with my son on a national ranking series regatta. We were late from the start and other had already gone a couple of minutes ago. By pure unbelievable luck, we were the first rounding the windward mark. We were so excited that we capsized the boat when setting up the pole. Well, at least the photographer got good series of pictures on how to get the boat up again.

Finnish Polar Bears challenging Autumn conditions
The last Ranking Regatta collected ten Snipe teams in Kantvik, close to Helsinki. Conditions were a bit challenging as wind was such low as 1-2 m/s and temperature went below 0 degrees Celsius during night time. Well, daily a bit warmer and sunny though.
Anyhow, four races could be sailed. Masters Championship was won by brand new European Vice Secretary Reino Suonsilta - Mirja-Liisa Marttila. The overall winner of the last Ranking Regatta was father-daughter team Mikko and Viivi Valjus.

BSF 160 Years Anniversary Regatta

Pori September 3-4, 2016

By Kai Saahrelo

All together 12 Snipes were participating BSF 160 Years Anniversary Regatta. Race was 5th Snipe Ranking of the season. Additionally 15 Finn and 30 E Class boats were racing their Finnish Nationals at Kallo waters.

Weather conditions could have been a bit better. Shifty and low 4-8 knot winds gave some challenges for the sailors with some rain showers, especially on Saturday. Luckily wind went up in the last 6th race on Sunday with lots of sunshine and 15 knots wind, bringing smile on the faces if not earlier. Racing was tight on all levels inside the fleet.
