World Sailing - Submission 091-17

Monday, 13 November 2017 19:46

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, November 11, 2017

At the World Sailing Annual General Meeting a submission (091-17 "World Championships") was approved that could have positive impacts on Snipe events. We now have more World Championship options, including mixed and boys/girls youth championships.

Also the number of boats required by World Sailing for a valid World Championship has been reduced. The new requirements are 20 boats (formerly 30), 5 countries, and 2 continents. This can have a positive impact on the Women's and Junior World Championships.

Junior Worlds, Comments and Suggestions

by Nicholas Grael

I have participated on the 3 last editions of the Snipe Jr. Worlds (Rio 2013, Talamone 2015 and Coruña 2017), and even though this edition had a fewer number of boats participating (13 boats less than what we had in Italy), the level of the competitors was fore sure the highest.

The first day we had two races sailed inside the bay with medium to light winds. The second day we had only one race sailed outside the bay with very light and shifted winds, a very cold and rainy day with a long time waiting ashore. The third day was back to inside the bay and we sailed three races with medium to strong winds, and the last day it were three races with strong winds sailed inside the bay

The land of the rising sun shined under the rain

The Japaneses Ozora Iwatsuki and Kosuke Miyake won the only round of the day. Mafalda Pires de Lima, who ends in the third position, keeps at the top of the ranking.

It was a difficult second day of the Snipe Junior Wolrd Championship that takes place in A Coruña during these days. The unstable wind, accompanied by the rain and the fog, complicated the sailing a lot and only one regatta was celebrated, the third one in total until now. Because of this, there were unexpected results regarding the first day, when were more stable conditions, but the favourite participants strengthened their privilege positions.
