The 1996 Midwinter Regatta in Clearwater

Tuesday, 11 September 2018 07:30

by Gonzalo "Old Man" Diaz

According to the report in  the May 1996 Snipe Bulletin: There was no races the first two days as winds were 25 to 40 knots.  Tuesday morning, although the forecast was still very bad (35 knots of wind), the day looked good so the RC sent the Fleet out.  20 of the 27 boats registered went out.  For the first race they had 12 to 15 knots. For the second race the winds continued to build up.  By the start of the 3rd. race wind had stepped up to 25 knots the reaches were a blast with the big breeze and six-foot breakers. In the second reach the wind hit 30 knots and people started to drop out.  Only 10 boats made it to the finish line. Hal Gilreath finished 4th but Charlie Bustamante and John McRae dropped out of the race. Both Hal and Charlie made it alright to the Club, but John ended up in the beach with a broken mast.

Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, May 19, 2018. Final results after 4 races

2. Ernesto Rodriguez & Alex Sidi, 10

3. Peter Commette & Connie Commette, 11

Wow! What a day!

It was wild and crazy for all of us out in the ocean. Even with huge waves, pouring rain and the wind picking up to 30+ knots, the RC and sailors tried their best to have a race.... but mother nature was stronger and races were postponed. All so anxious and eager to sail, but the RC had no choice but to send us in with only one bent mast and some bruised egos after several capsizes. Fortunately, we were able to get in 4 good races in the protected Intracoastal Waterway right off the LYC dock. Augie Diaz and Kathleen Tocke got the band back together and beat us all. Ernesto Rodriquez and new crew Alex Sidi were second; Peter and Connie Commette were third.

Lighter winds prevailed on day two with Scheuerman and Du Plessis winning two of the three final races. Rounding out the podium were Dubovik and Baab in second and Sharon Johnson and Tara Lobo in third. Ernesto Rodriguez and Peter Commette were the on-water fleet coaches of the day.

A huge thanks to Miami Fleet Captains Kay and Ken Voss for organizing the event, Ernesto Rodriguez, Peter Commette, and Augie Diaz for lending boats and coaching.

APRIL FOOLS' DAY - THIS IS A JOKE

An investigative reporter has discovered that Commodore of SCIRA Pietro Fantoni stayed at Mar-a-lago resort during his recent trip to Florida for the Snipe DonQ Regatta in Miami.

Former Commodore Gwyneth Crook was stunned when she was shown the receipts for Fantoni's stay, which he had billed back to the Snipe class through a series of blind international transactions. "He claims there was no collusion." she said, shaking her head, "but he can't argue with the paperwork."

Don Q - Final

Miami, March 25, 2018. Results after 8 races (1 discard)

Report by Carol Cronin

The 52nd DonQ Rum Keg Regatta delivered its dependable mix of Serious Sailing, Serious Fun over three days and eight races on Biscayne Bay. With seven countries and 31 boats, it remains one of the premier Snipe events. Friday's forecast was for 15-18 knots of NE breeze, but it never built to anything over 14 knots and the shifts provided plenty of opportunity for gains and losses on the four leg windward leewards. Ernesto Rodriguez/Kathleen Tocke won all three races, so the battle was for second overall with the points tight behind them. (This theme would continue for the next two days.)
