Regatta Logistics & Area Information - Notice of Race

Buffalo, July 19-26, 2013

The 2013 US Snipe Nationals are being held at the Buffalo Canoe Club on beautiful Abino Bay in Ontario, Canada, just across the border from Buffalo, New York. The Buffalo Canoe Club was the host of the 2013 Western Hemisphere Championship, as well as other major regattas such as the Laser Radial, Lightning, Sunfish, & Flying Dutchman World Championships.

This is the second year that the US Nationals are open to competitors from all nations. Last year, teams attended the US Nationals from Italy, Brazil, Ecuador, Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Canada. SCIRA USA would like to extend a special invitation to international Junior Teams to attend a pre-regatta clinic and Jr. Nationals. Housing and free charter boats will be provided to junior teams from Europe, South America, and Japan.

Interview with Bruno Bethlem, WH&O Champion

Friday, 21 December 2012 18:51

ST: 2012 was a great year for you. Brazilians, Don Q, Nassau, US Nationals and Western Hemisphere & Orient. At the begining of the year did you expect a incredible season like this?

Bruno: The first good surprise was our Nationals in January. Now there is a tie between us and Xandi [Paradeda] that got it 8 times. And that is so good because Xandi was a mirror for me for a long time. Some years ago when I got the title for the first time I could not imagine that I could get it 8 times. Don Q and US Nationals was also hard as a good training for the WH&O. The WH&O was tough because, as usual, during the most important regattas the sailing conditions were totally different from the practice week.

ST: How did you prepare this last sailing season? Did you choose a particular regatta as your main goal? Family and work ... Do you have time for training regularly?

Bruno: Our main goal was the WH&O because it qualifies for the Worlds in Rio. We've chosen important events in US because US fleet is very strong. We are old now and unfortunately we need to work. And I'm also married but my wife gives me a great support for sailing at a high level. She is behind me cheering for me. We are always trying to get some time for training but sometimes it is impossible to train and race the regattas. So we are more interested in racing big regattas than training.

Florida, the "Sunshine State"? Not always ...

The 2012 edition of the U.S. Nationals was held in Miami, well-organized and hosted by Coral Reef Yacht Club. Miami and Biscayne Bay in June are very different from how they appear in March. When it is sunny, even rigging the boat is hard work in the heat; when it rains, the heat does not diminish, but simply increases the humidity.

Local experts had predicted that light winds would prevail at this time of year. Instead, as often happens when there is a big regatta, the statistics were denied. The average wind conditions were medium to strong, for both the Juniors and the Seniors Nationals. It was a shame that on Wednesday and Friday we were not able to race, because of storms that did not guarantee safety. Apart from that, it was a great regatta.
