Dunphy Snipes

Tuesday, 10 July 2018 22:32

Dunphy Boats built a lot of sailboats, most importantly Snipe class one-design racing and family sailboats, which were very popular and competitive in the late 1930s and 1940s until a few years after WW II. Many Snipe championships in the midwest were won with Dunphy Snipes, particularly in the years just before WW II.

Snipe designer William F. Crosby had a new Dunphy Snipe #4000 "Also" which he raced on Long Island Sound in 1939 and 1940.

Winchester Invitational

Monday, 09 July 2018 21:00

Winchester, MA, USA, July, 7-8, 2018

by Liz Glavinski and Cam Fraser

The newly renovated Winchester Boat Club was host for the first Snipe regatta on the Mystic Lake this year. In all, twenty boats competed. We are excited to say that regatta featured more girls than guys on the water, and was highlighted by 4 boats with only females! Look to see those pairings and many more down in Newport in August for the Snipe Women's World Championship.

Racing on Saturday was, as we like to say, particularly mystical. The Race Committee did great work getting 4 windward leeward races in under difficult conditions. The breeze swung from the west to the north to the south to the east, sometimes all in the span of a couple minutes.

Gerber Snipe #12021

Wednesday, 04 July 2018 22:05

1960 Wooden Gerber-built Snipe #12021

By John Rose

I saw this boat at the 2009 Classic Snipe Rally/Halloween Regatta in Atlanta, and was thrilled by the beauty of the all varnished hull and deck and the "show condition" of this beautiful Snipe.  Truly a work of high skill and quality and beauty.  See attached photos.  This Snipe has always been in Atlanta since new.

Fire on the Water

Lincoln, NE, USA, June 17, 2018. Soltero & Dahl-O’Leary Win Fire on the Water

Thank you to all that attended the 51st Annual Fire on the Water Classic Snipe Regatta on Saturday and Sunday, June 16-17, 2018…or wish you would have!  It  was a great time!  We had 18 boats participate from around the district, including 5 from Bow Mar, 4 from Rocky Mountain, 2 from Omaha, 1 from Dallas, and 6 from our own Lincoln fleet.  Attached are the complete results.  Thank you to everyone that helped in some way…and to those that participated. Everyone seemed to have a great time, and the prime rib was a huge success. We might try that again next year!

Annapolis, June 16, 2018

By Alex Pline

After six races is near perfect Annapolis early summer conditions, Evan Hoffman/Shalom Fadullon take a strong lead in the open division (Under 30), while Christian Filter/Emily Gonzalez lead the Junior division (Snipe US Junior Nationals) and Morgan Carew/Keith Carew have a commanding lead in the Special Juniors division. The breeze was SE at 8-10 all day and PRO Steve Podlich chose to set the course up in the Severn River instead of the usual course of Greenbury Point as the power boat chop was less and the breeze better. Three more races tomorrow to round out the series. With 18 boats and great competition, almost every spot is still up for grabs!
