The 1996 Midwinter Regatta in Clearwater

Tuesday, 11 September 2018 07:30

by Gonzalo "Old Man" Diaz

According to the report in  the May 1996 Snipe Bulletin: There was no races the first two days as winds were 25 to 40 knots.  Tuesday morning, although the forecast was still very bad (35 knots of wind), the day looked good so the RC sent the Fleet out.  20 of the 27 boats registered went out.  For the first race they had 12 to 15 knots. For the second race the winds continued to build up.  By the start of the 3rd. race wind had stepped up to 25 knots the reaches were a blast with the big breeze and six-foot breakers. In the second reach the wind hit 30 knots and people started to drop out.  Only 10 boats made it to the finish line. Hal Gilreath finished 4th but Charlie Bustamante and John McRae dropped out of the race. Both Hal and Charlie made it alright to the Club, but John ended up in the beach with a broken mast.

1975 US Nationals Program - Green Lake

Thursday, 30 August 2018 07:28

Green Lake, Winsconsin, August 16-22, 1975

This was a US Nationals with 129 Snipes

by Lee Griffith

Three weeks before this year's Green Lake Nationals I was moving some stacks of old magazines and I looked down and there was the Program from the 1975 Green Lake Nationals!! I didn't even remember that I had it, just sheer coincidence! I guess I spent 50 cents on it.

I took it to the regatta and it was fun to page through it. We found out that the Heidel House Honey's (last page advertisement) are no longer performing (the pub burned down), and this year's organizers didn't have Speed Queen washing machines as one of the full page advertisers.

US Nationals - Final

Tuesday, 28 August 2018 07:33

Green Lake, WI, August 26, 2018

Report by Art Rousmaniere

Augie Diaz and Julia Melton topped a small but very competitive fleet at the 2018 edition of the US Nationals held on pristine Green Lake Wisconsin on August 23-26. The classic adage "snooze, you lose" was in play all week as all of the races were hotly contested to the end with no team winning more than one race and multiple finishes having 4-5 of the front-runners finishing overlapped or within seconds of each other.
Day one brought 80 degrees, cloudless skies and moderate building conditions of 6-10 knots. Being a weekday and late in the vacation season meant the we had all the lake to ourselves. Doug Hart with Diego Escobar eeked out a 4-way overlap to take race 1. Art Rousmaniere with Lily Lichtenstein crossed the finish less a mere few boat lengths ahead of Diaz/Melton then Jim Bowers / Julia Rabin to claim race 2. Diaz / Melton finished the day by winning the 3rd race of the day, once again in a close finish.

5 Life Lessons from Winning a Worlds

Friday, 24 August 2018 07:15

by Carol Cronin

As a writer and sailor, there are few chances for me to sit back and, well, CROW about a recent accomplishment. But that’s exactly what I’m going to do today, because supercrew Kim Couranz and I just won a World Championship! For those of you who don’t speak sailing, these five lessons do apply to any of life’s challenges—and I promise to go easy on the lingo.

The Snipe Women’s Worlds in Newport included four days of sailing in a wide variety of conditions, just as any world championship should. Sailors have different specialties, and though mine has always been light air we won the event on the final and windiest day because we’ve been working hard to get stronger and faster in big breeze. Lesson #1: Work on your weaknesses.

Down to the Wire

The title for the championship came down to the wire. Only one race was planned for the final day and there was only a three point spread between the Norwegian team, Americans Cronin and Couranz, and the Portuguese-American team of Pires de Lima and Tocke. The Norwegians lead going into today, but with more breeze forecasted, bets were on the American and Portuguese boats who were gunning for one more race in breeze.

Norway in the Lead on Day One

Thirty-two teams headed onto Narragansett Bay for day one of the 2018 Snipe Women’s World Championship. Two races were sailed in a light and puffy northwesterly breeze coming off the land, which made unexpectedly lake-like sailing. Sailing incredibly consistent was the reigning Women’s World Champion, Brazilian Juliana Duque sailing with Marina Arndt. The pair won the first race, but were disqualified in the second.

Norwegians, Melsome-Myhre and Krefting, battled to win the second race of the day and lead overall with 6 points.
