US Nationals - Day 3

Thursday, 24 August 2017 07:21

Winchester, August 23, 2017. From Carol Cronin

For those of you watching from afar and waiting for results, I can't even tell you what our own finishes were today... but we had four races in both the Heinzerling and Wells. All I can tell you is that several lake sailors (and a few other teams too) are making it look easier than it is. 5-12 knots of shifty, puffy lake breeze with a very short course and tight fleet made for constant challenges. 2 days to go!

Briody Memorial Regatta

Friday, 18 August 2017 20:18

Newport, August 12-13, 2017. Report by John Dentinger

At the beginning of the summer, it didn't look good for holding a regatta--in fact, the Laser regatta at our club, Newport YC, was canceled. Why? The highest water level in Lake Ontario history--and our club, on Irondequoit Bay, was severely impacted--what was even worse, many homeowners on the bay suffered thousands of dollars in damage, or even lost their homes. Just look at the photo of the tree near the end of the road to our club; actually, it was only "partially" flooded.

Snipe Fleet #24

Regatta report by Robert Garlipp, photo gallery by Keith Topliffe and comments by John Rose

On July 23rd, five wooden Snipes and one Sharpie heeded the call for the 4th Marina del Rey Wooden Dinghy Race, an event now in its 3rd year.

As in previous years the race was organized on the day the Classic Yacht Association stages the Old Fashioned Day in the Park; and the classic motor yachts and classic cars lining the shore presented a magnificent backdrop to the start and finish of the race.

The race was hosted by the Del Rey Yacht Club, where the boats congregated in the morning for display, followed by a skippers meeting and breakfast.

Despite no wind on day one, a nice northeast breeze allowed the fearless Jubilee Yacht Club race committee to fit in six races in four hours on Sunday. Crews were tired but satisfied. And Saturday night's haddock dinner was a treat as usual!

Winchester, July 8-9, 2017

Report by Art Rousmaniere

Jim Bowers claims his 19th Winchester Invitational crown

Jim Bowers and Julia Rabin recovered from an OCS and capsize on the first of 8 races to eek out the most consistent and top-dating team of Cam Fraser and Liz Glavinski by 1 point over a weekend of gorgeous westerlies on the Mystic Lake outside Boston. Except for Jim and Julia's double boo-boo to start the weekend, the two teams finished no more than 3 boats apart all weekend. Top spouse team of Jock and Myrna MacRae took third while the daughter-mother Katie and Sarah Levinson broke the tie for fourth with current Tufts sailing team members Nick Giacobbe and Laura Dienemann.
