Hi all….. great sailing this weekend.
It dawned on me Sunday evening after returning home from the awards ceremony that this past weekend we honored two major contributors to the Snipe Class and Snipe Fleet 495.
Saturday evening’s party at the Kreb’s house saw a number of people acknowledge Earl Elms with stories and anecdotes about his life as a fisherman and sailor. At the same time we were acknowledging Herb Shear and his contributions to the fleet and class by sailing in the regatta named for him.
What we failed to salute was the friendship between Earl and Herb. There was a deep friendship between the two that spanned many, many years.
I had the pleasure of chairing the Herb Shear in the 1990’s, the first year that the perpetual trophy was awarded. At the trophy presentation was Earl who created and crafted the trophy that is awarded each year. Take a close look at the trophy and you will see that the silver dish that forms the centerpiece of the trophy is actually one of Earl’s world championship trophies. Earl’s dedication to his friend, like our dedication to Earl and Herb, will live on.
Serious Sailing, Serious Fun…..
