Mission Bay, May 18-19, 2013. Regatta report by John Fretweel

Eighteen Snipes turned out for Fleet 495's annual Herb Shear Invitational at Mission Bay Yacht Club, May 18-19. As usual in our class, there were a wide variety of competitors: wily veterans to first-time juniors, team weights from 240-340 lbs., married couples, unmarried couples, couples sailing two boats, and one woman skipper. We were especially pleased to welcome the proud new owner of USA 28858, SDYC Head Coach Nick Kaschak and his girlfriend, Krystal Treiberg. Seven races were sailed including one random leg distance race, and breeze ranged from 7-11+ kts with flat water in the bay.

Report from Fleet 495 Mission Bay - by Snooley

It has been a very strange winter, with some of the coldest runs of weather we have see in many years. We were fortunate to have the Las Vegas Regatta January 19-20 sailed under beautiful, warm, sunny So Cal skies.

20 teams came out for this event, but it was the Dave Tilson/Doug Hart show once again as these two teams continue to dominate the local events. Ian Brill was up front for Dave and Ryan Hopps for Hart, and it came down to the last race with Tilson winning. Besides the great weather and decent breezes, the biggest factor lately in local Snipe racing is the number of juniors we have coming out to join us. Whether it is crewing or steering, we are seeing increasing numbers of Juniors joining us.

Las Vegas Regatta - Final

Mission Bay, January 19-20, 2013. Results and report by Matt Hopps and Eric Heim

Seventy degrees and sunny greeted the annual Las Vegas Regatta and Junior Fundraiser. San Diego is a tough place to be in January. Competing alongside the 20 Snipes in the regatta were Lasers, Laser Radials, and a 29er contingent. It was great to have the other fleets (especially Junior Sailors) out there.

Las Vegas Regatta - Day 1

Sunday, 20 January 2013 09:04

Mission Bay, January 19, 2013.  Great day one for the Vegas regatta with much better breeze than expected, maybe steady 8-10. Hart and Tillson took all 1s and 2s in three races with lots of tight scoring behind. 20 boats once again! Nice work Fleet Captains Eric Heim and Matthew Hopps, as well Gene Ratliffe and everyone who put on the really excellent casino fundraiser.

Snipe Class and Class Promotion - 2

Monday, 14 January 2013 22:21

By Pietro Fantoni, SCIRA Secretary

After my article “Snipe Class and Class Promotion”, I received reports, ideas and suggestions from some countries and fleets including France, USA (Mission Bay), Argentina, Belgium, Croatia, United Kingdom and Italy.

As I said a good starting point for the Board, SCIRA countries, and fleets is to share ideas and experiences. Now I will try to summarize what I received, which hopefully will give you the Snipe sailors, fleet captains, Nationals secretaries and Board members some good inputs for improving Snipe activities at the local, national and international level.

I want to say thank you to all who responded, and I hope that other sailors will contribute their thoughts.

Carolyn Nute Regatta - Final

Monday, 29 October 2012 18:35

Mission Bay, October 27-28, 2012. Doug Hart and Becky Nygren won the Carolyn Nute Regatta.

Regatta report by John Fretwell.

Day 2 of the 2012 Carolyn Nute Memorial Regatta saw light air and some significant shifts in the leaderboard! After a clean sweep of first places from the son/father team of Tyler and Chuck Sinks on Saturday, Sunday opened with a bullet by Dave and Barbie Tillson, with skippers Aine Fretwell and Randy Lake close behind. In the next race it was Doug Hart with Becky Nygren in first, with the top junior team of Scott Sinks and Daniel Ron taking second. Tension was building, but the wind was not, as the fleet waited in in postponement, wondering if a final race and dependent throwout would occur before 3:30pm deadline. At this point the junior teams of Ryan Hopps/Alexandra Fayer and AJ Reiter/Riley Gibbs were tied on points for the second Jr. Worlds berth, if the throw out came to be!

Carolyn Nute Regatta - Day 1

Sunday, 28 October 2012 08:24

Mission Bay, October 27, 2012. Three nice races in 7-15 kts! Lots of tight packs in the scoring, but Tyler and Chuck Sinks dominated with 3 bullets, while Scott Sinks (7th) is currently the top junior in this qualifier for the Junior Worlds! Apparently it's in the genes!

The 2012 US Snipe Master’s Championship was held September 21-23 at Mission Bay Yacht Club. San Diego’s Fleet 495 hosted the event and was very pleased to see the strong turnout, with 32 teams from across the country hitting the water! Regatta Chairman Lanny Coon and his team of Craig Storms, Bob Bowden, Vicki Martin, Megan Murphy, Gus Wirth and many others handled charter boats, housing, and a social schedule that guaranteed this would be Serious Sailing, Serious Fun!
