World Snipe Day 2018

Friday, 16 February 2018 07:25

February 14, 2018

Dear National Secretaries,

Class promotion is one of the main aspects to work on and the fleet activity is the fulcrum of the promotion.

A lively fleet promotes events, regattas, clinics, training sessions, parties among its members, but should also focuses its attention outside on other sailors.

The aim is to attract new people to our Class by helping them discover our wonderful boat.

This is the reason why the Board warmly encourages fleets in all countries to organize a World Snipe Day, at the best time of year for such activities in your region.

by Pietro Fantoni, SCIRA Commodore

This is not meant to be a sermon. But an invitation to reflect.

The Board likes to see that there are many races with so many boats around the world. But it would most like to see that all the sailors are members in good standing with the Class Association. Also it would like to see that all the National Secretaries enforce the membership rule.

SCIRA ... Association, asociación, associazione, associação, asocijacija, vereniging, yhdistys, association, verein, association, stowarzyszenie, ассоциация, 協会

From the Webster dictionary: Association is: - a) an organized group of people who have the same interest, job, etc. - b) a connection or relationship between things or people

We have a boat, the Snipe!
We have the same interest: sailing Snipes!
We are all Snipe Sailors!
There is a connection or relationship between Snipes, Sailing Snipe, Snipe Sailors.
Definitely we need an association for sailing and racing Snipes!

How to Start Racing Snipes Right

By Carol Cronin

The Snipe is a two person dinghy that brings the well-balanced class motto “serious sailing, serious fun” to life at every regatta. With a range of ages and abilities, the racing is always competitive and the parties are never dull. It’s a class we can grow old in, with age-appropriate challenges and opportunities for every generation. The article I wrote 20 years ago, Why Sail a Snipe, still holds true today.

Some owners enjoy day sailing their Snipe, but competition is the boat’s primary appeal. And once you join this fraternity, anywhere in the world there is a Snipe sailor you can count on an instant friend.

Your best path to the pleasures and challenges of Snipe racing will vary depending on your location. Here are a few generic tips to get you out sailing the first time.

Why Sail A Snipe?

This article was originally published in the Snipe Bulletin, March 1995, but it still holds true today.

Pick up any recent sailing magazine and it will remind you how many racy new one-design options there are for today's recreational races. What, then, keeps such a large group of sailors from all levels addicted to the sixty-two year old Snipe?

The Snipe meets the Star Sailors League

Friday, 22 December 2017 07:34

by Pietro Fantoni

News for 2018: we will have an international Snipe ranking. Not a test, like in 2016, but for real.

At the end of November I went with Daniela Semec (our ranking expert) to Lausanne, Switzerland on Lake Geneva, home of the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Museum. We were invited to discuss about the Star Sailors League Circuit (SSL), which is in my opinion the best idea we have seen in the sailing world in recent years.

The SSL (created by sailors for sailors) will not stop where it is now: SSL's idea is to include other classes in an international ranking. Not just as single rankings for each class, but also, in the future, to create a common ranking that will determine the best of the best small boat sailors. The goal is ambitious, but SSL is determined and has very clear ideas regarding promotion, communication and marketing. SSL collaborators gathers and presents clearly the volcano of ideas coming from hundreds of sailors. They talk, listen, think, and then elaborate on what has been said to them. Their enthusiasm is contagious.

How to Reach Your Fleet Members

Wednesday, 04 October 2017 22:31

by Reino Sounsilta - Promotion Committee

Active communication is one of the most important tools to keep the local fleets engaged. We have a great class with great things ongoing and a lot of communication opportunities to update and promote.

Communication is vital at least for two reasons:

1. For active sailors. They need to know what is going on and when. This can be anything from getting reference information about rules and upcoming activities to the organizing of weekly club races or finding a missing crew.

2. For the to-be and non-active members. They are interested to learn more about Snipe Class, perhaps finding an opportunity to try Snipe or buying a boat. We should show positive momentum and this will hopefully sooner or later encourage them to join the action.

Snipe Open Day in Helsinki

Helsinki, May 18, 2017

by Juha Lehtinen

Fleet 481 Helsinki organized a Snipe Day in Helsinki 18th May 2017

This Class promotion event was successful. Five snipes with talented skippers, 10 possible future snipe sailors, one rib and some ground personel at club. All ten newcomers had chance to steer snipe, crews were changed efficiently at the sea. Light breeze, everybody had fun! After sail we have a bbq and coffee, and sauna naturally.
