14 Questions to … Antonio Bari

Antonio Bari, Snipe sailor and Chairman of Rules Committe - 1) Your first time on a sailing boat? When I was 16, on a cruising 36 footer crossing the North Adriatic sea. I couldn't enjoy sailing as there was no wind at all for two days... - 2) Your first time on a Snipe? One year later at the sailing school on Lake Caldonazzo. They used FJs and two very old snipes; the snipe was much better and being older and heavier than the others attending the course I always sailed the snipe. - 3) The most bizarre thing that happened in a regatta? Some years ago at the Piada in Cervia. At the first mark rounding, when easing the mainsheet we loosed it (no knot at the end), at the second mark we loosed the rudder as the stopper broke. At the end, we found we attached the shrouds at two different holes on the deck. Not the best performance indeed!

Antonio Bari, Snipe sailor and Chairman of Rules Committe

– 1) Your first time on a sailing boat?

When I was 16, on a cruising 36 footer crossing the North Adriatic sea. I couldn’t enjoy sailing as there was no wind at all for two days…

– 2) Your first time on a Snipe?

One year later at the sailing school on Lake Caldonazzo. They used FJs and two very old snipes; the snipe was much better and being older and heavier than the others attending the course I always sailed the snipe.

– 3) The most bizarre thing that happened in a regatta?

Some years ago at the Piada in Cervia. At the first mark rounding, when easing the mainsheet we loosed it (no knot at the end), at the second mark we loosed the rudder as the stopper broke. At the end, we found we attached the shrouds at two different holes on the deck. Not the best performance indeed!

– 4) What is the thing that most angers you in a race/regatta?

Those who infringe the rules to gain an advantage. Including the Rules Committees who don’t care of the rules to just finish the races.

– 5) Which is the race/regatta that you remember with the most pleasure?

There are many in 35 years!… the 1983 Italian Nationals, when I launched my first boat two days before the regatta using a completely different tuning from anybody else, we were so fast that we won, or the sixth race at the Nationals in Gaeta in 2007, a fantastic race in 20kn sailed head to head with three other crews, or the 2002 selection for the Europeans sailed in Bracciano after 3 years of complete stop from sailing, beautiful wind, beautiful place, warm water, the perfect situation to say “happy to be back”. But the regatta I’ll never forget is the last race at the 1992 Europeans: the best race I ever sailed, I can say a perfect race.

– 6) And the race/regatta you would like to forget?

None, you can always learn something from any regatta. If you forget one you may do the same mistakes again.

– 7) Your “dream in the peak”? (Your sailing dream?)

Sailing having fun, regardless if racing of cruising.

– 8) Sailing goals for 2013, and beyond?

To crew for my 14 years old son.

– 9) The most important people for you in sailing and in the Snipe?

When I was younger I was eager to learn and I tried to catch anything from anyone. And that has always been my guideline: to learn from anybody.

– 10) Why the Snipe?

At the beginning because it was the most common boat at my sailing club. Later because you can sail at any level you want and you’ll find the same camaraderie and friendship all over the world. To sail the snipe has given me the chance to travel and meet new people.

– 11) Your perfect sailing venue and your perfect sailing conditions?

For racing, Lake Bracciano; for fun the northern Lake Garda, but also Gaeta south of Rome or Rosignano in Tuscany when the southern Scirocco blows.

– 12) Besides sailing which other sport do you practice?

I am a P.E. teacher, so sports are a great part of my life. But I enjoy skiing and playing basketball over all.

– 13) Are you superstitious?

Definitely not.

– 14) Your perfect holiday?

Any holiday if you can relax or visit new places.
