How to Reach Your Fleet Members

Wednesday, 04 October 2017 22:31

by Reino Sounsilta - Promotion Committee

Active communication is one of the most important tools to keep the local fleets engaged. We have a great class with great things ongoing and a lot of communication opportunities to update and promote.

Communication is vital at least for two reasons:

1. For active sailors. They need to know what is going on and when. This can be anything from getting reference information about rules and upcoming activities to the organizing of weekly club races or finding a missing crew.

2. For the to-be and non-active members. They are interested to learn more about Snipe Class, perhaps finding an opportunity to try Snipe or buying a boat. We should show positive momentum and this will hopefully sooner or later encourage them to join the action.

Helsinki Regatta

Sunday, 02 July 2017 18:34

Helsinki, July 1-2, 2017

by Mikko Valjus

Helsinki Regatta was sailed in the coast of Helsinki on the 1.-2. July. The regatta was won by grand master Claus Carpelan with Risto Valjus.

The competition for the second place was tight.

Chita and Pii Wahlroos took it and Riku Vääriskoski and Salla Vaden were third with the same points.

The wind was over the limit on Sunday so no races could be arranged and only 3 races could be sailed during the weekend.

Next regatta in Finland will be Airisto Regatta in Turku in mid August.

Warm but low breeze at R2 Tampere Regatta

In addition to 1100 km long sea coast line in Finland we have got over 60.000 lakes. Näsijärvi is one of those lakes where Snipes can be seen racing. So there' s a huge potential for growth of Snipe sailing measured by volume of water, heh. All by all, fourteen Snipe teams gathered together 170 km to north of Helsinki at the home club of famous Bjurström brothers - some of older Snipe guys remember them from top of the World 70's and 80's.

Helsinki, May 18, 2017

by Juha Lehtinen

Fleet 481 Helsinki organized a Snipe Day in Helsinki 18th May 2017

This Class promotion event was successful. Five snipes with talented skippers, 10 possible future snipe sailors, one rib and some ground personel at club. All ten newcomers had chance to steer snipe, crews were changed efficiently at the sea. Light breeze, everybody had fun! After sail we have a bbq and coffee, and sauna naturally.

14 Questions to ... Reino Suonsilta

Wednesday, 07 December 2016 22:42

Reino Suonsilta, Snipe sailor from Helsinki and member of the Promotion Committee

- 1) Your first time on a sailing boat?

I rented a 20 ft daysailer with my girlfriend (later my wife) after reading tons of sailing books. We barely managed to get back in one piece, with only one lost jib bag.

- 2) Your first time on a Snipe?

In 1979 we bought our first Snipe, a Persson copy built by Svante Lindholm in 1974. We sailed that for 2 years, went away from sailing for 20 years and then started again in 2004.

- 3) The most bizarre thing that happened in a regatta?

I was sailing with my son on a national ranking series regatta. We were late from the start and other had already gone a couple of minutes ago. By pure unbelievable luck, we were the first rounding the windward mark. We were so excited that we capsized the boat when setting up the pole. Well, at least the photographer got good series of pictures on how to get the boat up again.
