It was 9.15am in Santiago de la Ribera 2016. We'd left the Europeans after party still in full swing at 4.30am that morning but knew we had to be up to sort out our chartered Snipe to make sure all was in order.

Upon reaching the yacht club we came upon two slightly weary Norwegian Snipe sailors and we stopped for a chat. It was Steffen Skjønberg and Maria Ohrn. They were on their way to see friends much further north in Spain but since they had partied all night, needed some recovery time. We helped them load their boat onto a trailer and whilst doing so, Steffen talked fondly about our UK Nationals being once again held in Orkney in 2017. He was adamant he was going to sail his Snipe from Norway to Orkney across the North Sea and join us! Maria was not so keen and made it clear this would be a solo voyage! I was concerned for his safety and asked if he would have a safety boat with him to which he replied "No, as I would end up having to rescue them!" He said he would sell his Snipe in Orkney after the event (for a very good price I might add) although it would not be coming with a trolley or trailer!!

Interclub Competition in Orkney

Tuesday, 18 July 2017 07:24

Orkney, Scotland, July 13, 2017.

by Isobel Tipler

The annual Inter Club competition between Holm SC and Stromness SC in Orkney was held in Stromness yesterday evening. We had a really good turnout of thirteen boats, six from Holm and seven from Stromness but the last Stromness boat to finish in the first race was excluded from the results for both races to make it a fair six boats each. Pity the wind did not turn up but on the other hand the Hamnavoe ferry did.

In the end it was a win for Stromness SC by 62 points to 94 points.

Snipe Sailing in the Orkney Islands

Friday, 07 April 2017 18:32

The Orkney Islands lie North of the Scottish Mainland.

The Snipe Class has been popular in the Orkney Islands for many years now. The picture attached shows snipes racing in the 1960s in Kirkwall Bay. This summer Orkney Sailing Club will be hosting the 2017 Snipe UK Championships. The event will run from 12 to 14 August. See the event website for more details: http://www.uksnipenationals2017.org.uk/

Many thanks to the Orkney Archives for the picture taken by Wilfie Marr.

Stromness, Orkney Islands, Scotland, UK. Regatta report by Andy Gibson

August 2-4, 2013. Full results and photos

25 snipe competed in the UK nationals at Stromness, Orkney. This is the largest fleet at a UK national for many years thanks to the large turnout from the local Orkney snipe fleets.
This was a memorable event for many reasons
- Meeting a new community of avid snipe sailors in a region where none of the regular fleet had visited before
- The weather was awesome, including the days before & after the event (unusual for these Islands even in August)
- The sailing waters were beautiful with crystal clear bays surrounded by hills and mountains
- the racing was great, masterminded from a classic 1920s lifeboat that served as committee boat - on loan from a local museum
- The Orkney hospitality, music, beer and whisky led to some serious fun
- The wildlife that we saw included seals every day, a minke whale, puffins

Maxim Romain sailed a great event and was a worthy winner
