2017 Whittemore St John, Board of Governors, District One Championship Regatta Report

Lake Quassapaug, CT. June 24-25, 2017

by Joel Zackin

OK, first the beef: This year another National or International Snipe event took one of our regional regatta weekends forcing the Quassapaug Snipe Fleet 231 to host a regatta labeled the Whittemore St John/Board of Governors/D1 Championship Regatta. Why does SCIRA US and SCIRA International always want one of our weekends for a major event and then ask us how can they help increase Snipe sailing at the local level? Really.

Snipe Capsizes for Smaller Skippers

Tuesday, 06 June 2017 18:11

I usually write articles when I have a solution to a particular problem. This one is more of a cry for help from a small skipper: how do I self-rescue after a capsize?

The first day of the 2017 Snipe North American Championship in Fort Lauderdale was epic: an 18-22 knot easterly, and a huge ocean swell overlaid with smaller mixed up waves rebounding off the beach and reefs. It was a great day for racing Snipes—and also a day where even a small mistake can lead to a capsize.

Colonial Cup

Annapolis, June 4-5, 2017. Final results after 6 races (1 discard)

Annapolis served up a chamber of commerce weekend for the twenty competitors at the 2017 Colonial Cup at Severn Sailing Association. A few days before the regatta, the weather forecast was not looking very promising with high pressure system filling in over the Chesapeake Bay. This usually results in a dying northwesterly breeze and the infamous Annapolis "Washing Machine" chop. However, there ended up being two cold fronts bookending the regatta which kept the conditions lively and challenging.

Day 3 of the 2017 Snipe North American Championship: 9-12 knots and 2-3 foot seas. Thanks to Matt Ditzel for the photos.
