#7082 "Snowball"

The 1953 Snipe Worlds Championship (Monaco) is described in Ted Wells "Wells' Wanderings" column in the October 1953 Snipe Bulletin, and there is also an article with boat equipment and regatta observations by the winning crew in the December 1953 Snipe Bulletin. The winning skipper that year was A.J. Conde Martins (age 17 at the time) and the crew was Fernando Lima Bello, both from Portugal. Their results in the 5-race series were 2-2-5-3-3. The USA (2nd place, finishes 1-DSQ-2-1-1) was represented by Tom Frost (also age 17 at the time) and crew Fred Schenck sailing 1948 Varalay Snipe #7082 "Snowball" which was also winner of the USA Snipe Nationals that year.

Dunphy Snipes

Tuesday, 10 July 2018 22:32

Dunphy Boats built a lot of sailboats, most importantly Snipe class one-design racing and family sailboats, which were very popular and competitive in the late 1930s and 1940s until a few years after WW II. Many Snipe championships in the midwest were won with Dunphy Snipes, particularly in the years just before WW II.

Snipe designer William F. Crosby had a new Dunphy Snipe #4000 "Also" which he raced on Long Island Sound in 1939 and 1940.

1960 Wooden Gerber-built Snipe #12021

By John Rose

I saw this boat at the 2009 Classic Snipe Rally/Halloween Regatta in Atlanta, and was thrilled by the beauty of the all varnished hull and deck and the "show condition" of this beautiful Snipe.  Truly a work of high skill and quality and beauty.  See attached photos.  This Snipe has always been in Atlanta since new.

Snipe Fleet #24

Regatta report by Robert Garlipp, photo gallery by Keith Topliffe and comments by John Rose

On July 23rd, five wooden Snipes and one Sharpie heeded the call for the 4th Marina del Rey Wooden Dinghy Race, an event now in its 3rd year.

As in previous years the race was organized on the day the Classic Yacht Association stages the Old Fashioned Day in the Park; and the classic motor yachts and classic cars lining the shore presented a magnificent backdrop to the start and finish of the race.

The race was hosted by the Del Rey Yacht Club, where the boats congregated in the morning for display, followed by a skippers meeting and breakfast.

78 yr old Snipe #3258 "Woody" - Owner Art Rousmaniere

This Snipe was owner built in Baltimore Maryland USA back before WW II, and has been modernized by an experienced wooden boat sailor on Cape Cod (who sails and races Beetle Cat sailboats which are popular in that region, and is/was an officer of that class organization). Art is the Snipe Class USA National Secretary and is fully involved in hosting the "east coast" Classic Snipe Rally on July 8-9, 2017 at his home sailing club on Mystic Lake in Winchester/Boston Massachusetts. This Snipe was displayed and sailed in the 2014 Classic Snipe Rally, also held there.
