- 3) The most bizarre thing that happened in a regatta?

In the sixties we had some fantastic regattas in Barcelona and Valencia. I won it overall one year and the next year we also participated in the South European Champinonship in La Cassou, France. It was a week before Barcelona – Valencia.

Our boat was measured and the weight in France was ok so we went to Valencia.

We were lucky to win this big regatta again and to my big surprise my boat was 100gr. too light ( out of  183,4 kg ) and I was disqualified . The scale had a deviation written plus/minus 3 kg. – It took me some time to return to Spain after that.

Unfair sailing or team racing.

- 5) Which is the race/regatta that you remember with the most pleasure?

That was when I won the Danish Championship (60 boats ) with my son Jonatan (14 years ) for the first time.

Alexandre Tinoco (aka Amiguinho), Snipe World Champion.

1) Your first time on a sailing boat?

In the Optimist sailing school of Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro, influenced by my grandmother Vera, when I was 13 years old. The classes were on Saturday mornings, I liked it so much that during the week I could only think about sailing.

2) Your first time on a Snipe?

In 1999, as Ricardo Lobato's (Blu) crew. On the first jibe, the boat capsized near Botafogo beach, with a strong wind coming from the southwest. That dip was the start of my passion for Snipe. Right after, we competed together the South-Brazilian Championship in the island of Florianópolis and we went by car taking two Snipes. That inspired me to do something similar in 2005, when I crossed all South America with another friend, from Rio de Janeiro to Algarobo in Chile, passing by the Andes Mountains, also taking a Snipe.

3) The most bizarre thing that happened in a regatta?

When I was sailing as Mario Simoes' (Mariozinho) crew, in Rio de Janeiro International Sailing Week, in the last downwind leg, we were leading the fleet but ended up capsizing in a risky jibe. I couldn't find Mariozinho anywhere and he could not find me. As the boat was completely up side down, when I was diving looking for him in the water, he was looking for me out of water. When I went up to look for him, he was under the boat, looking for me, each in the opposite side of the boat. After some time, we found each other under the boat, under the water, and then we turned the boat back and continued the regatta.

- 1) Your first time on a sailing boat?

Three weeks old in a Star – they had me hanging in a bag on the front of the cockpit.

- 2) Your first time on a Snipe?

1989/90 ish. A friend was practicing in one, and I gave it a spin for 5 minutes. I thought the tiller was ridiculously long. I first raced in one in 1991 at a collegiate regatta in Japan – we won.

-3) The most bizarre thing that happened in a regatta?

Being removed from my Snipe by the bowsprit on an Ultimate 20. The guy didn’t want to go above us on the run, so he decided to jibe. His pole was so close to the water, and he was so close to our Snipe that he swept me off the deck while I was driving. I was pulled off the Snipe and went in the water, the Snipe capsized, it was the first time I had capsized a Snipe.

- 4) What is the thing that most angers you in a race/regatta?

Dealing with heated rules discussions. It is frustrating when people see your decision to protest as a personal comment on how they live, instead of accepting they made a mistake. Protests can be a part of sailing – we need to remove the emotional part.
