Great regatta this weekend. Seven great races in 85 degrees and sunny. Local hotshot Paul Abdullah and Nancy Gilreath won the tie breaker over Peter and Connie Commette. Ernesto and RJ Rodriguez were close in third.

Fort Lauderdale, May 9, 2015.

The day began gloriously sunny and warm with a light Southwest wind. The fleet towed to the racing area. By 10:30 the wind had switched to the predicted Southeast and was at 7 knots at the 11:00 AM start, building throughout the 5 races to 13 knots by the last race, the races being run flawlessly by Lauderdale Yacht Club. The regatta was won on the last leg of the last race by 6 inches. Tight racing in the ocean in bathing suit weather. Can't beat that.

Snipe sailors representing eleven countries converged upon Biscayne Bay for the 2015 Don Q Rum regatta, hosted by Coconut Grove Sailing Club. Thirty-eight teams comprised of champions, veterans, and novices completed five races over three days of classic Miami sunshine, warm water, and cool breezes.

On Friday the sea breeze didn't start to fill in until noon, so there was plenty of time for more bagels and coffee. Winds varied between 7-10 knots, mostly from the southeast. Finishing first in the first race was Luis Soubie and Diego Lipszyc of Argentina, followed by Raul Rios of Puerto Rico and local Andre Guaragna, and third saw locals Augie Diaz and Kathleen Tocke. Raul and Andre took over first place the next race, with Augie and Kathleen still right behind. Louis and Diego slipped back to eighth while locals Peter Commette and Jensen McTighe picked up the third.

1989 US Snipe Nationals in Miami

Wednesday, 18 February 2015 07:37

By Gonzalo "Old Man" Diaz

Here is the Snipe Bulletin September 1989. See the cover photo with the black background (the storm).

The cover photo of the snipe bulletin says it all. It shows Ed Adams rounding what I think is the jibing mark with a real black background (the storm coming!!) In that same photo, way back, you can see a snipe that has already put the main down and is on starboard tack heading to Key Biscayne. I bet you that is me!!

There are two nice reports of the storm in the 1989 September Snipe Bulletin pages 11 to 14. One from Charlie Hagedorn and one from me.

I was not that aware in 1989 but I now can tell you that if you see a black storm that covers 180 degrees of the horizon, the word is run for your life!!!
