Mission Bay: Learning at all Levels

Wednesday, 25 January 2017 14:09

Ever since I joined the Snipe class in 1990, Fleet 495 in San Diego, CA has been a stronghold of both Serious Sailing and Serious Fun. I’ve made the trek across the USA several times for big events: US Nationals. Worlds. Western Hemispheres. This past weekend, I happened to be in town for one of their most famous “small” events: the Las Vegas Regatta on Mission Bay.

The event first started as a casual way for teams to tune up for the upcoming season, which for a few lucky locals includes a cross-country trip in March for Florida’s Midwinter Circuit. The name came from the casino/fundraiser that was traditionally held on Saturday night.

The Day in the life of the SCIRA Office ...

Wednesday, 12 October 2016 22:20

At the recent Sailors Open Forum, a question was asked about what the SCIRA office does.... While this answer is a bit complex, I’ll try to break it down so Snipe sailors can get a feeling for what goes on in the office daily and year-round.

Believe it or not, I’ve now been in this position as Executive Director for 23 years. Big changes have happened since the first trip to the 1993 Worlds in Porto Alegre with the help of Commodore Terry Timm and Vice Commodore Horacio Garcia Pastori. Class officers and members have helped usher in many of these changes.

  • The Class transitioned from phone and faxes to email & the internet
  • www.snipe.org was one of the first Classes to create a website (thanks to Alex Pline & Steve Keckler)
  • The Class moved membership registration to an online system saving the class postage & printing costs, and is now hosted on a cloud based system
  • Global Measurement program and measurer’s guidebook was created
  • Implementation of sail royalties, realizing over $100k in revenue since its inception in 1996
  • Implementation of Snipe merchandise helping spread the brand & loyalty of members as well as gaining $50k
  • Created a regatta management package that is sent to all major regatta organizers
  • Dedicated websites have been created for Worlds, European and WH&O regattas

Fleet Size Matters

Friday, 11 December 2015 07:36

George Szabo (Quantum Sails San Diego) has won 21 championships, including five US Snipe Nationals and four North Americans. In 2015 he won the two final Star Sailors League Regattas in two very different venues: The SSL Lake Grand Slam in Lausanne, SUI, and the SSL Finals in Nassau, Bahamas.

At any sailing regatta, fleet size affects overall strategy and priorities. The Star Sailors League fleet starts off big, and then ten boats make it into the quarter finals. Seven make it into the semi-finals, and four sail the finals. The declining fleet size format is pretty exciting—worth a try for a weeknight race series.

SSL Lake Grand Slam started off with 70 boats on the line, so it was important to have speed, and to sail fast to the correct side of the course. With a big fleet, managing your lane to always have clear air is super important. But also important is to consider where you will tack if you are behind. You need to anticipate where the fleet will tack in front of you, and place yourself accordingly – so that when they all tack to go back to the center or weather mark - you will have a place with clean air.

Carolyn Nute Regatta - Final

Monday, 02 November 2015 07:34

Mission Bay, October 31 - November 1, 2015.

Report by Seth Siegler and photo gallery (All the pics were taken by Judy Tillson http://www.judytillsonphotography.com)

San Diego has an interesting quirk where when the Santa Ana Winds rip through Socal (in some areas, at over 40 kts), it somehow results in extremely light and unstable breeze in Mission Bay. That's really saying something since for Mission Bay, 12 knots is normally considered "breezy".

But even with the Santa Ana's in the forecast, San Diego's fleet 495 dove headlong into one of the best regattas of the year: The Carolyn Nute Memorial Regatta. With 23 teams registered, they rigged up on Saturday with the breeze blowing lightly from "the wrong direction". But by the time the boats slipped off the sandy beach at Mission Bay Yacht Club, the breeze had turned around and filled in to a surprising 10+ knots. Things were looking up!
