Fleet Size Matters

Friday, 11 December 2015 07:36

George Szabo (Quantum Sails San Diego) has won 21 championships, including five US Snipe Nationals and four North Americans. In 2015 he won the two final Star Sailors League Regattas in two very different venues: The SSL Lake Grand Slam in Lausanne, SUI, and the SSL Finals in Nassau, Bahamas.

At any sailing regatta, fleet size affects overall strategy and priorities. The Star Sailors League fleet starts off big, and then ten boats make it into the quarter finals. Seven make it into the semi-finals, and four sail the finals. The declining fleet size format is pretty exciting—worth a try for a weeknight race series.

SSL Lake Grand Slam started off with 70 boats on the line, so it was important to have speed, and to sail fast to the correct side of the course. With a big fleet, managing your lane to always have clear air is super important. But also important is to consider where you will tack if you are behind. You need to anticipate where the fleet will tack in front of you, and place yourself accordingly – so that when they all tack to go back to the center or weather mark - you will have a place with clean air.

Carolyn Nute Regatta - Final

Monday, 02 November 2015 07:34

Mission Bay, October 31 - November 1, 2015.

Report by Seth Siegler and photo gallery (All the pics were taken by Judy Tillson http://www.judytillsonphotography.com)

San Diego has an interesting quirk where when the Santa Ana Winds rip through Socal (in some areas, at over 40 kts), it somehow results in extremely light and unstable breeze in Mission Bay. That's really saying something since for Mission Bay, 12 knots is normally considered "breezy".

But even with the Santa Ana's in the forecast, San Diego's fleet 495 dove headlong into one of the best regattas of the year: The Carolyn Nute Memorial Regatta. With 23 teams registered, they rigged up on Saturday with the breeze blowing lightly from "the wrong direction". But by the time the boats slipped off the sandy beach at Mission Bay Yacht Club, the breeze had turned around and filled in to a surprising 10+ knots. Things were looking up!

Regatta report by Nikki Bruno

San Diego. Home of beautiful breeze, sunshine, swell, and the 2015 US Snipe Senior Nationals! Ok and lots of kelp too. Hosted this year by Mission Bay Yacht Club, the regatta had 43 entrants - with a couple of them deciding to join at the very last second, or leave before the last second...

The women, juniors, and special juniors had their turn on August 8th and 9th. Taking first at the women's nationals was Lisa and daughter Lexi Pline of Severn Sailing Association. Winning the Juniors was local Scotty Sinks and crew Greer Wattson. The top placing special junior was local Shane Tillson with father David, who won against his brother Cole by 3 points.

Monday, August 10th was the first of five days of racing for the Senior Nationals. The breeze hung around 7-8 knots for the day, shifting ten or so degrees around due west. A classic five-leg windward-leeward was the first course of choice, and continued to be for the rest of the regatta.
