APRIL FOOLS’ DAY – THIS IS A JOKE

In another display of international tact and diplomacy, Russian President Vladamir Putin has announced that the 2014 Western Hemisphere & Orient Championships (WHO) will be held on Big Diomede Island, the easternmost point in Russia. The event is expected to coincide with the opening of the long-awaited Putin Bridge, currently being constructed across the Bering Strait.

Putin initially proposed naming the bridge “Peace Bridge” or “Ambassador Bridge,” but the Canadian government threatened to sue for copyright infringement.

“Hands across the sea is better if you have boats,” Putin explained in a press release about the venue change. “And my closest advisor, Brainard Coopervich, tells me Snipe is best boat.”

The regatta dates have also been modified to 23-29 June 2014. “Is unfortunate to conflict with Piada Cup,” Vasily Zaytsev, the executive director of SCIRA Russia, said. “But after 1 August is too much ice in Diomede.”

Sailors traveling from the US and South America are being encouraged to drive north and then west across Alaska to test the new bridge. The first 20 trailers to cross the bridge will have their entry fees covered for the regatta. Drivers of double trailers will receive free vodka for the entire event. And any vehicle bringing three or more Snipes across will automatically be eligible for all future WHOs in the future.

Zaytsev is optimistic about the plan. “Here in Big Diomede we have no trailers. So we count on Snipe friends from west to help test new bridge.” Zaytsev has recently been relocated from Moscow to the remote island in order to make sure the new bridge will open on time.

As a backup plan, the original dates will be kept open by the San Diego Yacht Club. “If there’s no bridge, or too much ice, we’re going back to plan A,” Brainard Coopervich said. “We don’t want the Russkies to win just because they’re the only ones who can get there.”
