We have some great news for the Snipe Class, and also for the sport of sailing in general. The next Snipe World Championship will be held in Castel Gandolfo (August 20-27, 2017).

In a close bid, the SCIRA Board felt the bid from the Vatican City would provide a better championship than the bids from Spain and Finland.

Castel Gandolfo is located 15 miles Southeast of Rome, on Lake Albano. In the town lies the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo, which serves as a summer residence and vacation retreat for the Pope. The regatta office will be located within the Palace, which has extraterritorial status as one of the properties of the Holy See and is not under the jurisdiction of Italy.

Lake Albano hosted the canoeing and rowing events of the 1960 Summer Olympic Games. The weather conditions in August are perfect for sailing: every day the temperature is exactly 25° Celsius (77 Fahrenheit), with abundant sunshine and twelve knots of breeze from the SW.

The regatta will be organized by the Snipe Fleet Vatican City, called in Latin "Classis Civitatis Vaticanae".

The Vatican City Sailing Federation was formed two years ago, and the only class officially recognized so far is the Snipe Class. They have a fleet of 12 boats and their fleet activity takes place on Lake Albano, as well as on the Tevere River and on Lake Bolsena. With a population of 690 people and only 0.44 km sq (0.17 sq mi), it has quickly become the country with the higher Snipe density per capita in the entire world.

Giorgio Brezich has been lured out of retirement with an offer of cardinal's robes, and he has graciously agreed to run the 2017 Worlds. Watch this space for Registration and NOR, coming soon.
