The Junior European Championship and the Senior European Championship will be held in the waters of Cervia from 5-14 August.

This event will be a milestone for the prestigious Circolo Nautico Cervia, founded in 1950 and now chaired by Massimo Zoli. The club is one of the most important on the Adriatic Sea with over 500 members, a very competitive youth Optimist and Laser team and a world-class technical staff. The sport director is Franco Minotti who well represents the resourcefulness and practicality of the people of Romagna.

In recent years the Club has organized many important regattas including a 420 World Championship, the CICO (Campionato Italiano Classi Olimpiche), J24 Italian Nationals, Laser Italia Cup, Optimist Spring Cup, and Trofeo Mirabilandia, formerly the Trofeo Topolino.

Regarding the Snipe Class, the success of the Romagna Fleet with the “relaunch” of our boat in the Adriatic has gone hand in hand with the Piada Trophy regatta, which has been run since 2007.

These original ideas of Alberto Perdisa e Giovanni Stella found a valuable and essential support in the Circolo Cercia and his staff, and the phenomenon “Piada” today is well know in the Snipe community as a high-level international regatta on the water with maximum fun on the land. Previous Piada regattas have been attended by some of the best sailors, including Snipe World Champions Augie Diaz, Bruno Bethlem and Alexandre Tinoco, Olympian Peter Commette, Argentinian Louis Soubie, Belgians Hens, Janssens, Peeters, and Van Cauwenbergh, Spanish Fresneda and Triay, Abe from Japan, and many others including of course the best Italian Snipe sailors: Fantoni, Lambertenghi, Longhi. Michel, Rochelli, Solerio and Zaoli.

In 2012 the “Piada” will migrate to Talamone in Tuscany, because Cervia will be fully committed to organizing the Senior European Championship, which will be preceded by the Junior European Championships. The entire organization of the club Cervia is already working to produce a significant expansion of the ground infrastructure and better logistics in general. This is all required to host the second most important event after the World Championship.

The Europeans promise to be one of the most interesting and closely fought with teams from the rest of Europe eager to confirm their supremacy over the Italian hosts—who are confident of being able to fight through on friendly waters.

Ashore many interesting events are scheduled: a fascinating journey along the canal that will bring the teams and their friends to the ancient and historic salt stores where they can taste food and wine from Emilia Romagna and the piadina, real queen of the Riviera Romagnola. This is an event that plans to go beyond the simple racing, to show off the culture of a region increasingly tied to the sea, in perfect style “Piada”.

Check back soon for the Notice of Race.
