Training Team Race 2K

Thanks to the full availability of RCC Tevere Remo, to its Directors of Sailing (Edoardo Barni and Marco Staccioli) and to Alessio Picciotti (trainer) we organized a first meeting on the topic of Team Race. Last Friday, 21.st we met at the historical headquarter of the Club in Rome for a lecture on the conduct of the team race, its rules and organization.

The event was open not only to the members of the Club but also to all the Snipe sailors interested in Team Racing. At the end of the evening we have organized crews and teams for Saturday and the response in terms of participation was exciting: 8 crews of which 2 of the Club plus another 2 crews taken by the Team Racing of the Club to complete two experienced helmsmen Snipe , while the other 4 teams were well run on the boat.

Saturday morning we all met at Anzio at 10.30 for a quick review of the rules, composition of the teams as balanced as possible and organization of the “flights”. The boats available were 4, 1 of the Club, the other 3 from crews that are training at Anzio during this winter.

The Club has made available the Committee boat (who also did as ” island ” for the 4 teams who were waiting for their turn ) and a raft for assistance/umpiring on which Alessio followed flights, filming and gave suggestions. The weather conditions were not simple for a team race. If the wind (about 10 knots) and temperature (12/14 C° degrees) were fine .. the usual 3-meters wave pledged newbies and experts but also those who were waiting on the Committee boat (can you imagine?).

Around 1:30 pm flights started and fun began. Match short about 10 /12 minutes excluding the pre-starting time, the development of the first tactics and their verification, shouts to exchange information and positions with Alessio who followed and filmed. At the end we managed to close four flights, with all the crews that have tested the formula of 2K. Unfortunately a damage to a snipe (not due to clashes!) has not allowed us to go further but we keep good experience to be able to repeat soon in view of the official Team Race scheduled for the end of March.

Going ashore we treated ourselves with tacks and more training, then all to disarm snipes, hot shower and finally the expected debriefing with Alessio with movies, photos and comments but also hot pizza and a good beer offered by Giovanna and Luigi also to celebrate a birthday!

In addition to thanking the club, I thank all those who have responded with enthusiasm ( Aimone , Andrea, Edoardo, Giulio and Fabrizio, Martino from the Tevere Remo and Eugenia, Giovanna, Serena, Ivo, Louis, Mauro, Roberto, Stefano and Ulderico used to racing on Snipe.
