Day one of the WH&O featured light air and flat water in South Bay, at the far end of San Diego Bay. After a lengthy tow, the race committee set up a windward leeward course in 5-6 knots of breeze and flat water. Randy Lake/Kate Sheahan (USA) led the way to the left side and rounded first, then went up the right side on the second beat. The biggest pass of the day went to Doug Hart/Ryan Hopps (USA), who rounded the final port gate just behind Randy/Kate but immediately tacked and found a little bit more wind on the left, which jumped them into a big lead by the finish.

The breeze had lightened up for the end of race 1, but built back up to 5-6 again for the start of race 2. The right started to pay off and continued to make gains over the course of the race, though it was easy to overstand the starboard layline with the current running from left to right. Raul Rios/Fernando Monllor (PUR) took the bullet, and Breno Bianchi/Flavio de Castro (BRA) finished second. But with a third in race 2, Randy/Kate hold a one point lead going into day 2.

After sailing, the group gathered ashore for daily first awards, a carving station, and a keg donated by Vince Casalaina. What more could a group of hungry and thirsty Snipe sailors need? Tomorrow the plan is to go out to the ocean, so it will be a very different day of sailing.
