Western Hemisphere & Orient Championship – Day 3

San Diego, September 10, 2014 Report by Carol Cronin Interview: Luis Soubie and Diego Mini Lipszic (Photo courtesy of John Payne) We sailed two races today in a 10-14 knot westerly that rewarded boat speed and hiking hard. The first race was a battle to the right, and it was hard to find clean air anywhere inside the starboard layline since everyone arrived at the mark at the same time. Luis Soubie/Diego Mini Lipszyc (ARG) went on to win the race, after the breeze built on the last leg to what would be the maximum for the day. A long swell overlaid with wind chop made the sailing hard, and speed was hard to come by for many teams used to flatter water. Race two surprised most of the fleet by being left-side favored. There was also a surprise winner: Raúl Faura Nieto/José Piña Nieto (CUB), whose victory brings them up to 23rd overall. The wind lightened up in the middle of the race, leaving many teams with rigs that were too tight. Those who stepped to the left side were rewarded with more pressure, in contrast to the usual local rule to "go right". After sailing, model boats were assigned to each country and the series (sailed right in front of the Yacht Club bar) was won by Team Colombia. Afterward everyone enjoyed a barbecue on the deck. Tomorrow the race committee will try for three races, in anticipation of lighter winds on Friday. Results (6 races, 1 discard) 1. PUR Raul Rios & Fernando Menllor, 12 2.
