APRIL FOOLS’ DAY – THIS IS A JOKE

After becoming the first International Sports Federation to be awarded the international sustainability standard ISO 20121, World Sailing has selected the Snipe class to test new compliance standards before enacting them across all classes.

ISO 20121 specifies the requirements for an Event Sustainability Management System to improve the sustainability of equipment. The standard provides building blocks that enable boatbuilders and sailing classes to continue to be financially successful, while becoming more socially responsible and reducing their environmental footprints.

As the first test class, SCIRA international has worked closely with World Sailing to design rules that wiill meet these new goals while leaving the basic strengths of the Snipe class unchanged. Below are the specific rules for boatbuilders, regatta organizers, and sailors:

TitanicConstruction3From April 1st 2019 boats can no longer be built of plastic and every part of the boat, sails and equipment must be 100% recyclable.

Allowed materials include:

Hulls: cardboard
Sails: cotton
Mast, boom, pole, blocks: wood
Lines: hemp

Plastic, resins, and aluminum are not allowed.

During regattas all support vessels must be human-powered. For the main committee boat, we suggest a galley.

To go to regattas, the Snipe can not be towed by car but must be pulled by a human-powered vehicle, such as a rickshaw.
