Riccione, June 1-2, 2013. Pietro Fantoni and Laura Cerni win in Riccione.

Results and regatta report by Alberto Perdisa

It was a nice weekend in Riccione and finally the summer arrived, allowing, for the joy of Snipe sailors, five beautiful races as scheduled.

At the registrations we understood that, as often happens in these part of Italy, they work well also for the gift for the sailors, which isn’t the normal and usual t-shirt but a splendid bathrobe embroidered with the logo of the regatta.

On Saturday the wind initially blew at 14 knots from north-east, with strong current and moderate waves, then the wind dropped a bit, but never blew below 10 knots. The first race, as all others in the series, saw the strong duo Pietro Fantoni – Laura Cerni threatened only in the first leg but then able to stretch easily. Good second place for Alberto Perdisa – Marco Rinaldi, preceding Filippo Perdisa – Aimoni Fabbri.

The second race had a little less pressure but first place was never contested. Second were the young team Perdisa jr-Fabbri, and third was the duo Tom and Jacopo Stahl.

The third race of the day showed a similar script with Fantoni-Cerni in trouble only after the start but then rulers from mid-race onwards, followed by Stahl – Stahl and Giuseppe Prosperi – Federica Biondi.

On land, all the sailors had a well-deserved rest at the bar, waiting for the dinner of grilled fish that has made this regatta famous. It is difficult to match such abundance and quality, or the warm and friendly atmosphere, of this historic sailing club.

On Sunday the temperature was definitely summer, the sea flat and the sea breeze from 5 to 8 knots. Even in this conditions Pietro and Laura confirmed their superiority. In the first race they were attacked by Perdisa sr – Rinaldi, who eventually finished second. The unusual team Stefano Selleri – Francesco Rossi were the authors of an excellent performance, but they were caught OCS. Third were Prosperi – Biondi.

For the last race of the series the two lower steps of the podium were still open for four teams. At the end, behind the sailor from Moruzzo, Stahl and Prosperi took second and third place, ahead by only one point of Perdisa jr and Perdisa sr.

As a final comment I have to say that, behind the dominant team Fantoni – Cerni, the races were particularly hard fought, uncertain, and close with great performance also from the local teams Fuzzi – Batarra and Gallinucci (aka “il Gallo”, “the rooster”) – Filipucci, who often raced in the lead group and then gradually lost positions. Fast as always were Guadagni – Amato and, at times, Gianmarco Pepe – Marco Prosperi, affected by their excessive weight.

The prize-giving was exciting, with a sumptuous buffet, in memory of the great International IYRU judge and Snipe sailor Manlio Mignani.

I wish to express my heartfelt thanks to the president and all the amazing staff of the Club Nautico Riccione, to the excellent P.R.O. Franco Pagliarini, and to the very active Giuseppe Dimilta and to Paolo Fuzzi, who proposed a few years ago, with the passion and enthusiasm that characterizes him, to dedicate to Manlio this regatta. This is a regatta that many want to become a “classic regatta” for the Italian Snipe Class.
