The 2014 Carolyn Nute Memorial (and unofficial Halloween) Regatta was another San Diego classic with 22 boats on the water and standard, ideal Socal weather and sailing conditions.
Saturday morning started slow with Mission Bay looking more like a glass table and clocking about zero knots. At just about the exact time that boats started touching into the water, the wind gods changed their mind and ordered up about eight knots of solid breeze.
Running two windward-leewards and one olympic triangle, a mix of teams found themselves in and out of the mix. The breeze actually built into the low teens, which in San Diego, is considered to be quite breezy! Teams stretched their legs, working to stay in the pressure, in phase with the big shifts and out of the holes. Consistency was key and Rick Arneson and Diana Waterbury did it best, holding a three point day-one lead over David Tillson and Blaire Herron.
Post-racing on Saturday featured a keg of local Ballast Point Brewing refreshment and an amazing spread of homemade chili, cookies and snacks brought together by the competitors. Fleet 495 takes the Snipe motto of “Serious Sailing, Serious Fun” damn seriously.
The three races on Sunday featured a bit less breeze but it was plenty good and shifty to have some good, fun competition. Not to mention a few sailors embracing the Halloween spirit and racing in full costume…
The fleet pushed things a little harder on the starting line on Sunday and scored two general recalls and a couple of “I” flags as a result. Arneson and Waterbury picked up two more bullets to secure the overall win, but were kept company, the whole way, by the likes of Chuck Sinks and Katherine Bowman and Eric Heim and Melissa Denman. Final scores got shuffled with Tillson getting called away by work (earning a few DNS’s) and a handful of OCS’s handed out to others, thanks to those “I” flags. When the dust settled Chris and Lauren Wright and Seth Siegler with Jenny Lyons rode solid sundays into the top five, joining Arneson/Waterbury, Sinks/Bowman and Heim/Denman.
