San Diego, February 7-9, 2014. Results and report by Carol Cronin

Doug Hart and Ryan Hopps won the only official qualifying slot out of the Snipe Western Hemisphere and Orient Qualifier, which also served as the District 6 Championship. The three day event was sailed in two venues: South Bay and Coronado Roads.

The long tow to and from the race course dominated the conversations around the keg Friday night, but in between we also fit in two short races in flat water and a shifty westerly. Hart/Hopps jumped into an early lead with a 2,1, while Chuck Sinks/Briana Provancha posted a 3,2.

A shorter tow on Saturday took the 18 boat fleet out to the ocean, east of the entrance to San Diego Bay. By the 1230 start a nice WNW breeze had built enough to create a few whitecaps, and a new leader quickly emerged over three races: Rick Arneson/Diana Waterbury posted a 3,1,2 to win the difficult day. With sheers and puffs filling from both sides, no lead was safe and finishes were tight.

Dinner Saturday night brought together competitors, families, and a few visitors from the just-finished USSailing Leadership Forum. Based on the number of kids in the room, the future of Snipe sailing is safe in this part of the world.

Sunday brought another tow to the ocean and 2 more races in 9-12 knots. In spite of an OCS the first race, Hart/Hopps retook the overall lead with a fourth in the final race, which was won by Dave Tillson/Ian Brill.

Another race was going on a few places back, with Carol Cronin/Kim Couranz winning the women’s North American berth for the Westerns over Aine McLean/Paris Henken. McLean/Henken were awarded the Women’s Challenge trophy, however, since the scoring for that trophy eliminated the non-female competitors.
