The 2014 Herb Shear Classic was held on May 17-18 at Mission Bay Yacht Club.

23 Teams took to the course to compete for top honors while 3 Classic Snipes were on display all weekend as a bit of eye candy. Everyone was glad that the hot and dry Santa Ana conditions abated for the event and gave Fire Crews all over Southern California a welcome change in fortunes as well.

Wind direction was a very shifty Southwest all weekend. About 10-12 knots on Saturday and 7-10 on Sunday made sure that everyone had their chance at the front of the fleet at some point (even if it was short lived while Randy Lake and Kate Shehan flew by).

The eventual winners scored 5 wins out of 7 races, discarding a third to finish with a total of 7 pts! Fleet 495 stayed true to the Snipe Class motto with Serious Sailing and Serious Fun. After racing on Saturday, everyone made the trek to the Krebs home in Point Loma for a celebration in remembrance of Sailing Legend and past World Champion Earl Elms. The atmosphere was fantastic with Sailors joining Fisherman and many other groups all in attendance who told their favorite Earl stories and enjoyed tons of fresh seafood as well as hoisting plenty of beers in memory of our hero.

Big thanks to John Fretwell (District Governer) who organized the regatta, Pete Hunter who served as PRO, Jim Graham for helping to incorperate the Classics into the format, and Eric and Carolyn Krebs for hosting the party. Congrats to team Lake/Shehan on a solid win. Maybe you guys can put on a clinic before the PCC’s in July at ABYC to keep the scores a little closer!
