21 Teams braved 70 degree temperatures in January to contest the annual Las Vegas Regatta hosted by Mission Bay Yacht Club. Many viewed this event as a great tune up for the Western Hemispheres Qualifier to be held in 2 weeks out of San Diego Yacht Club, but Mother Nature did not cooperate in the wind department.

Saturday was a light air affair with crews in the boat all day. At only one point did I ask my crew Jerelyn to move to weather and sit on top of the daggerboard… The RC managed to get off 3 races though and the usual suspects picked their way through the shifts and holes to emerge at the pointy end.

On Sunday, it was a bit more solid pressure wise across the course, but big shifts and lots of velocity changes meant another day of tough going if you found yourself in bad air and out of phase. By the middle of day 2, it was apparent that the team of Randy Lake and Kate Sheahan were the only ones that could stay in the top 5 with any consistency.

While the Vegas Regatta is a great way for Fleet 495 to dust off the cobwebs each year, it has also served as a way to give back to the Mission Bay Yacht Club in the form of a Junior Fundraiser Casino Night. This year, we managed to raise $5000 to go toward new equipment for the Juniors! Since our fleet tends to cull the Junior Ranks for quality crew and to train the next generation of Snipe Sailors, we view this fundraising as a bit self serving, but it keeps us in good graces with other members and hopefully we have some good will capitol to burn when we host the GFU on Aug 8-9…
