The Italian Navy Academy organizes an annual traditional regatta open to many classes, from big boats to dinghies. This year also included the Snipe Class.

The regatta was important for the Italian Snipe sailors because it was part of the selection for the World Championship in Talamone. The selection of the “Squadra Azzurra” is based on a ranking of four regattas: the Regatta Nationale held last September in Talamone, this Regatta National in Livorno, another Regata Nazionale next June again in Talamone and the Italian Nationals in Rimini in July.

This weekend the teams experienced various and exciting conditions. On Friday the strong SE wind forced the Race Committee to delay the departure until late afternoon when the wind dropped. Two races were completed with wind between 12 and 18 knots and big swell, both won by Enrico Solerio and Paolo Lambertenghi. For the other places the races were hard fought between Fantoni-Gorgatto, Bruni-Collotta, Longhi-Zuzic and Rochelli-Semec.

On Saturday instead the wind was never stronger than 3 knots and the teams waited in vain for the start of the third race.

On Sunday three races were completed, all with light winds and strong current, all dominated by boats from the Gulf of Trieste. Pietro Fantoni and Marinella Gorgatto won the third race (behind Stefano Longhi and Eleonora Zuzic unfortunately OCS). Fabio and Daniela Rochelli Semec took the victory in the fourth and fifth races.

After five races, with no throwout, thanks to their two first places on the first day and to a conservative strategy in the remaining three races in light wind, Enrico Solerio and Paolo Lambertenghi deservedly won the regatta.

Dario Bruni and Carlo Collotta, with great speed and very consistent (6-3-2-2-6), were second. Pietro Fantoni and Marinella Gorgatto, despite bad first legs but thanks to excellent recoveries, were third. The new entries in the Snipe Class Fabrizio Onofri and Jacopo Di Giuseppe did a great regatta finishing fourth. Filippo Perdisa and Marco Rinaldi, who are improving their performance regatta after regatta, were fifth. Sixth, heavily penalized by an OCS, was Rochelli-Semec.
