Despite a bad weather forecast, 5 races (of 5 scheduled) were completed in Monfalcone, thanks to the excellent work of the Race Committee and hosting club, Yacht Club Hannibal. This was the last Regata Nazionale of the season, a good test for some teams just before the Junior and Open Worlds.

On Saturday, after a long delay, due to thunderstorms and then lack of wind, the RC was able to set the course and 2 races were sailed in light wind from SE and strong current from the opposite direction. The first one was won by Fabio Rochelli and Daniela Semec and the second by the locals Enrico Michel and Antonia Contin.

On Sunday after heavy thunderstorms overninght, the weather was different with a bright sun and clear sky. The visibility was unbelievable with a spectacular 360° view of the Baia di Panzano, Golfo di Trieste and Istria: looking from Monfalcone to the sea, from left to right, you could see Castello di Duino, Castello di Miramare, the town of Trieste in the distance, Muggia and then Pirano in Istria, Slovenia, and closer on the right Punta Sdobba. Behind, to the far far north, the Alps with the top of Monte Canin with the first snow after a warm summer. A gorgeous panorama.

Enrico and Antonia also dominated — the third race on Sunday. The wind was offshore and a little bit stronger, but very shifty and puffy. The wind increased for the fourth race and Pietro Fantoni and Marinella Gorgatto were able to take the lead and cross the line in first.

At the start of the fifth and last race, considering the discard, 4 boats could win the regatta (Enrico Michel & Antonia Contin, Fabio Rochelli & Daniela Semec, Stefano Longhi & Eleonora Zuzic and Pietro Fantoni & Marinella Gorgatto). Despite a bad start, Fantoni-Gorgatto rounded the windward mark in front of the fleet and extended until the finish. Behind them Rochelli-Semec finished second, just in front of Michel-Contin and Longhi-Zuzic.

This incredibly tight regatta was won by Pietro Fantoni and Marinella Gorgatto, tied with Enrico Michel and Antonia Contin (both with 8 points). Fabio Rochelli and Daniela Semec ended up third with 9 points and Stefano Longhi and Eleonora Zuzic , fourth with 10.

Also we have to remember Marco Pantano and Francesco Fontana in fifth with some good races and two junior teams: Michele Meotto & Marco Mazzaroli, often in front of the fleet and Ludovico Pittani & Ilaria Rochelli, very smart with their tactical decisions.

Yacht Club Hannibal organized a very nice event, showing great efficiency on the water and warm hospitality on the land. The RC and PRO Gino Costantini ran 5 fair races, changing course at each variation of wind direction, and it wasn’t easy with the unstable weather especially on Saturday. On the social side the dinner and the prize giving banquette were superb and the sailors enjoyed the food and friendly atmosphere. The club put a big effort into this regatta and at the end each sailor was happy and satisfied. Hope to sail there again soon.
