Report by Paolo Cardoni
The Regata Nazionale Talamone was held on 12-14 June on the water of “Snipe Bay”, organized by the Circolo Vela Talamone. The Regatta Nationale determined selection for the Italian teams to sail in the next World Championship that will take place on the same waters in September.
At the end of the 7 races scheduled Enrico Solerio, several times an Italian national champion, sailing with Paolo Lambertenghi, won this selection regatta with authority, confirming their status as the top Italian team.
In the three days of racing they battled until the end against the boat USA 30288 skippered by Augie Diaz (silver medalist at the recent Star European Championship in Gaeta with Bruno Prada, twice world champion in the Snipe, multiple US champion and US Rolex Yachtsman of the year). Augie finished second in Talamone with Kathleen Tocke as crew.
Dario Bruni with Carlo Collotta ended in third place, followed by Giampiero Poggi and Eugenia Vanni fourth, competing in the selection trials with a just delivered new boat. Fifth was Pietro Fantoni/Ilaria Rochelli, who were always in high ranking positions in all conditions.
Despite the threat of thunderstorms and related shifts, the Race Committe managed to complete all the races. The races were challenging untill the finish line and the strategy never obvious.
The Race Committee, chaired by the International Race Officer Marcello Montis, had a lot of work to do to reset the course in order to make fair races in testing conditions for the competitors. The wind was predominantly from the southeast between 5 and 12 knots with choppy waves. Sunday it turned south and reached 16/17 knots at times with a nice swell.
For this Regata Nazionale the Circolo della Vela Talamone did a very good job welcoming the sailors with drinks, fruit and snacks at the boat-park after each day’s racing. On Sunday the club offered a a nice dinner “under the sails” in the garden of the clubhouse (it is a lighthouse). On the water, the staff of the the CVT, coordinated by the club Vice Commodore Alessandro Testa, always guaranteed professional management of the races. Fabio Barrasso, who will be the PRO at the next Worlds, observed from the committee boat. This regatta was a test event for the Junior and Open Snipe Worlds and Fabio and Alessandro took notes for the big event in September.
