In spite of a category 4 hurricane that hit only two weeks before the first race, the 2016 Snipe Masters Worlds went off without a hitch. It was a truly impressive show of Bahamian get-it-done attitude, and we all owe the locals a HUGE thank you for all the work they put in. No docks? No problem. Temporary docks were donated and installed to provide hoisting and launching space—though thanks to the unusual northerly breeze direction, there was not enough space for all the boats to tie up at once. As a result, the traditional Nassau lunch break between each day’s two races was abandoned in favor of two races back to back. Otherwise it was business as usual, both on the crystal clear waters of Montagu Bay and back at the Royal Nassau Sailing Club after sailing.

And wind? Yup, that was provided too, though not from the “usual” direction. Instead of going a little more right each day, the breeze worked its way left as the week wore on. One day had to be abandoned for winds above the Masters’ limit (15 knots), but three and a half days of flat water and breeze allowed completion of the series without sailing more than two races each day. Only on the last day did we have to postpone to wait for the breeze to settle and build, and soon we were all hiking hard again for the last two races.

Ernesto Rodriguez/Kathleen Tocke (USA) won the seven race series, with only one finish out of the top three. Luis Soubie/Diego Lipszyc (ARG) also sailed a consistent regatta and were the only team that could threaten the top team the last day. Three of the nine countries stood on the podium, all Apprentice Masters (45-54), leaving 4-6 to the Masters (55-64). There was also a special “key to the City of Nassau’ trophy awarded to the oldest competitor, Oscar González Urquía, age 85.
