Report by Francesco Fontana

Last weekend Punta Ala hosted the first Regata Nazionale of this year.

Seven races in three days were completed in the beautiful Gulf of Follonica, with increasingly favorable weather; light winds, but never absent.

The Yacht Club Punta Ala welcomed us with excellent organization on the water and lavish hospitality on the land.

Unfortunately there were only 25 boats on the starting line, including two Finnish teams. Those who didn’t come missed out on three wonderful days of racing, with spring temperatures and sunny weather.

The work of the Race Committee, chaired by Alessandro Testa, was excellent.

Three tought races were sailed on Friday, with light winds predominantly from the south, and the top finishers were Alberto Schiaffino/Giampietro Pasquon, Pietro Fantoni/Marinella Gorgatto and new team Andrea Battisti/Ylenia Guerrini. After the regatta the club served pasta for everyone.

On the second day, with the wind still from the south but stronger, especially in the first race, Pietro Fantoni and Marinella Gorgatto showed absolute domination with three bullets, stretching in the standings. The Vice Commodore seems more at ease with the wind more sustained.

After the racing, sailors enjoyed beers and focaccia.

In the evening we were hosted at the club with a magnificent dinner on the beautiful terrace overlooking the bay and the island of Elba. The chef surprised everybody with excellent seafood and a cake dedicated to our regatta. Once again it honored our motto, “Serious sailing, serious fun”.

On the last day the wind waited for a long time, as predicted by the forecast, but eventually a good southerly breeze filled the Gulf and allowed us to sail the last race, won by Andrea Battisti/Ylenia Guerrini, followed by Pietro Fantoni/Marinella Gorgatto, Enrico Michel/Antonia Contin, and a very fast Roberto Tozzi/Giuseppe Borrelli.

I want to warmly thank the Yacht Club Punta Ala, and I hope to be there for sailing in the near future.
