Report by Joel Zackin

Twenty one Snipe Teams attended the 2019 Whittemore St John Regatta. JibeTechs, Perrsons, DB Marine, Eclipse, Skipper and McLaughlin Snipes were all there. Our Special order of weather arrived: Clear skies and a big, disturbed breeze. 10-15 knots of base NE gusting 20-25+ knots in dark, knurly puffs that would find the water and spread in multiple directions. What Fun! What a work out! The planning was epic!

Many teams took the tack of “discretion is the better part of valor” and headed ashore when they had experienced enough of the wild wind.

Four races were run on Saturday and, in almost as strong wind, three more were held on Sunday.

Showing the sailing skills of the fleet, only two teams vied for the Jacque Cousteau Award for Underwater Exploration – Mike and Erin Elser and Jim and Carol Tomassetti, both tied with two capsizes. Mike and Erin clinched the award by giving a combo “capsize demonstration/under water yard sale” on the way to the hoist. Many thanks to Lee Griffith for the CB recovery and unnamed others for the mainsail and other debris recovery.

Arthur Blogget and Lucas Maisello on guitars lead the fleet in sailing inspired sing along after dinner.

Kelly Rousmaniere and Andrew Goldfarb helped pick up capsized boats.

Steve Braveman, Jill and Kelly Buban, Bob Panza, Jurgan Hollock and others helped with RC and ran some really great races.

Many thanks to Jane Panza, Sarah Baywood, Kerri Wolcott and Andrew Keane for feeding us very well all weekend.

Arthur Blogget and Charlie Bes won the event with 5 Bullets. Stealing races off them were Andrew Keane and Jurgen Hollock, and Joel Zackin and Alyssa Hall.

Arthur and Jennifer Roumaniere (You needed to be named Arthur to place in this regatta!) took a close fought battle for second over Joel Zackin and Alyssa Hall.

All the sailors pushed their boundries to complete races in very challenging and turbulent conditions. Giant salute to youth sailors Minna and Brenden Hollock and Ben Braverman and Jackson Hurd-Messom for finishing all the races up right and in style!

Ice Cream trophies were awarded to all the competitors!

Come to Quassy!!
