The 2018 edition of the annual Board of Governors Snipe Regatta was held on the Beautiful Lake Quassapaug, Connecticut, August 25th/26th.
This year’s regatta did not disappoint, with stellar conditions, friendly competition, and lots of fun! Joel Zackin and the QYC fleet put together quite an event. Competitors were treated with breakfast & lunch each day, and a fantastic Steamers/Lobster/Steak/Chicken/Surf & Turf DJ Dance Party Saturday Night.

18 boats attended the regatta; more than half traveled from neighboring states for the almost-end-of-summer tradition. Once again, lots of families sailed together and against each other. 4 Hetherington-Youngs, 3 Zackins, Elsers, Rousmanieres, Bravermans, Chalasanis, Tomasettis, Panzas, Lodico/Tabor sisters. Quite a diverse and refreshing age demographic with 9 Recent college grads, 6 teenagers (3 of them skippers) and a 7 year old were on the racecourse.

Joel Zackin was slated to PRO the event, but a last minute party/vacation/walking ankle injury to Kevin Hetherington-Young put him on the DL. So after nursing his sore ankle with ice and a couple bottles of ibuprofen, Kevin ably took over PRO duties from Joel, saving us once again from the ‘Butterfly Course’. Joel in turn took Kevin’s wife Vivian, and sailed to a 5th place finish.

Kevin with help from Jill Buban, Bob and others ran 7 races (Olympic and Triangle courses), including a crew race each day: 4 races on Saturday in a 5-8 mph SSW and 3 on Sunday in 5-12 in a WSW. Quassy shifts with big Southerly puffs magically appeared from the direction of amusement park and from the Westerly cove, in no discernible pattern. However unlike previous years, no poles went up on the ‘windward’ legs, and only on the final triangle course did we beat to windward two legs in a row.

Board of Gorvernors Series:

Cam Fraser and Liz Glivinski put on a clinic throughout the weekend with a flawless scoreline of 5 bullets for the series. They weren’t always first to the weather mark, but speed, boathandling, keeping it simple by pointing the bow toward the mark, and not making any big mistakes or sailing into big holes seemed to be keys to their success.

Art Marguiles and Bob Branchard sailed their beautiful wooden snipe 9106 in the regatta.

Trading places race:

Hot off of competing against each other at the recent 2018 Women’s Worlds in Newport, Liz Glivinski and Jen Rousmaniere went head-to-head in the trading places races.

Saturday, Liz & Cam took the bullet followed by Jen & Audrey, but Sunday, Jen & Audrey won the race just ahead of Liz to win the tiebreaker for the coveted award.

Awards:

Series:
1) Cam Fraser/Liz Glivinski
2) Simon Strauss/Anne Patin
3) Stephen Braverman/Jackson Hurd-Messom
4) Sue Lodico/Jan Tabor
5) Joel Zackin/Vivian Hetherington-Young

Trophies were hand-made Mahogany bowls carved from the previous QYC decking. Some of the winners even danced on that decking in years past….

Trading Places:

1) Jen Rousmaniere/Audrey Hetherington-Young
2) Liz Glivinski/Cam Fraser
3) Hannah Callahan/Conor Fowler

Trophes were historical Snipe regatta relics from Joel’s collection: Shirts, Hats, Bags.

Hannah Callahan also won the party and received the Take-A-Bow award for her endless night on the dance Floor.
Joel lamented that he was unable to award the Get-A-Clew or the Golden Flipper awards this year.

Again, a fantastic event, and the weather even cooperated.
See you at Quassy next year!
