The newly renovated Winchester Boat Club was host for the first Snipe regatta on the Mystic Lake this year. In all, twenty boats competed. We are excited to say that regatta featured more girls than guys on the water, and was highlighted by 4 boats with only females! Look to see those pairings and many more down in Newport in August for the Snipe Women’s World Championship.

Racing on Saturday was, as we like to say, particularly mystical. The Race Committee did great work getting 4 windward leeward races in under difficult conditions. The breeze swung from the west to the north to the south to the east, sometimes all in the span of a couple minutes.

Art Rousmaniere and crew Lexi Pline took the first race, Katie Levinson and Emily Lynn took the second (after determining that battens are important), and Jim Bowers and Lara Dienemman took races 3 and 4. New snipe sailors Jack McGuire and Mimi Paz, recent Bowdoin Sailing alums, had a great day in the Swedish Chef, ending up with a couple top 5 finishes and finding themselves in 4th place at the end of the day.

The results were very tight after racing, with only 15 points separating the 3rd and 12th place boats.

Saturday evening, everyone got to relax and enjoy hors d’oeuvres, delicious Blue-Ribbon barbeque, and beverages on the Swanson Cove.

Thanks to all who contributed by bringing the appetizers, drinks, and desserts!

Racing on Sunday went swimmingly. Scratch that, meant to say Sunday was a great day for swimming. After a lengthy postponement on shore, the Race Committee summoned the sailors to the water for some Frisbee and relaxation. A weak easterly fought a weak westerly for about an hour with the result being 3 horns and a paddle ride back to shore at 1 pm.

Sailors packed up and made their way back to Swanson Cove for some appetizers, drinks, and leftover barbeque leading into the awards ceremony. Thanks to all the sailors, volunteers, and event organizers, especially fleet captain Katie Levinson, who did a great job putting the whole event together. Congratulations to Jim and Lara for winning this year’s Winchester Invite! Hope to see everyone back at Winchester later this year for the Halloween regatta!
