Comodoro Rasco - Final

Miami, February 4, 2018.

Report by Carol Cronin

“The Comodoro Rasco just has its own special vibe.” That’s how Peter Commette describes it, and I agree. I don’t know of any other regatta that combines so well the Serious Sailing, Serious Fun motto. The regatta is an “Old Man” regatta, initiated by Snipe legend Gonzalo “Old Man” Diaz Sr to honor Commodore Manuel Rasco of the Miramar Yacht Club in Havana. Old Man doesn’t believe in throwouts, so it’s a 5 race series over two days. That means no pushing the line or taking chances on the water, and it leaves plenty of time for socializing after sailing.

Comodoro Rasco - Day 1

Saturday, 03 February 2018 23:19

Miami, February 3, 2018.

3 races in a nice 12-18 knots of NE today (along with passing rain showers to rinse off the salt). Raul Rios and Sophia gave the rest of us a sailing lesson after christening a brand new boat just before leaving the dock. Peter/Connie Commette rounded the weather mark first more often than the scores might suggest. And the traditional Comodoro Rasco party at Old Man/Carmen Diaz's house ended with the annual viewing of videos from 1959 Havana. Someone had to explain what a VHS tape was to the junior sailors, but a good time was had by all.

Results after 3 races

1. Raul Rios, 3

2. Peter Commette, 7

3. Carol Cronin, 12

4. Raul Faura, 14

5. David Hernandez, 18

Capsize Analysis from Old Man Diaz

Tuesday, 09 May 2017 19:27

Editor's Note: On the second day of the 2017 DonQ Regatta, Charlie and Michele Bustamante capsized to weather at the jibe mark and lost their rudder.

Charlie and Michele had approached the jibe mark with the main most of the way out. After the jibe, the boat capsized to weather and the rudder popped off the boat. Charlie swam to get the rudder.

Meanwhile, Michele righted the boat by herself but could not get back onboard. The boat was blowing downwind faster than Charlie could swim, so a safety boat picked him up and returned him and the rudder to the Snipe.

Since Charlie and Michele have "only" been sailing Snipes together for 35 years, they turned to Gonzalo "Old Man" Diaz for some advice about how to avoid making the same mistakes on future heavy air days. We share that advice here so that others can learn from it as well.

Dear Charlie and Michele,

Here are some of my conclusions and analysis:

3. Ernesto Rordriguez & Katheen Tocke, 19

Report by Carol Cronin

Despite light enough air that we only touched the hiking straps in tacks, the 20 boats that signed up for the 2017 Comodoro Rasco were not disappointed. For one thing, we all got sailing lessons from Raul Rios/Mac Agnese, who won the five race, no throwout regatta with three seconds on Saturday and two firsts on Sunday. Given the light spotty breeze that confused even the locals, it was a very impressive display of both consistency and boat speed in difficult conditions.
